Why is Art Alternatives canvas splined?

Even though splining is the most expensive way to finish a canvas we prefer it for several reasons.
  • The canvas' sides are neat and clean, so you can incorporate painted edges into the artwork itself.
  • Splined canvases are much easier to re-stretch than stapled ones because there is more selvage material and there are many fewer staple holes. More selvage means there’s more fabric for your canvas pliers to grab as you pull the canvas taut. Staple holes increase the chance of ripping your canvas when you re-stretch it.
  • The overall appearance of a splined canvas is much neater if you are hanging the canvas without a frame.
